Man and van

Part-loads, handled the same way

Smaller than a removal and larger than a car boot. The scale changes; the wrapping, the care and the number of people do not.

  • A study or a spare room being cleared for a new arrival
  • A single antique piece going to a family member
  • A saleroom or dealer collection with a deadline
  • A garage-full moving to a storage unit
  • A student room to or from university
  • Furniture bought at auction in another county
  • A part-load into a new flat ahead of the main move
  • A single item that will not fit in a car and should not be strapped to a roof

What it is

A van and a crew who load it, using the same blankets, corner protection and straps we use on a house move. The only difference is how much of it there is.

What it is not is a vehicle with a driver who watches. If you would rather do the lifting, hiring a van is cheaper and we will say so.

Antiques and single pieces

A good share of this work in HA5 is one valuable thing rather than many ordinary ones — a chest going to a daughter, a dresser bought at a saleroom, a piece coming back from restoration.

Tell us what it actually is. A mahogany chest, a marble-topped washstand and a pine blanket box are all "one item" and all want different handling, different padding and sometimes a different number of people.

Where the line sits

At roughly two rooms of furniture. Past that a man-and-van booking made to save money becomes several trips and a long day, and a full removal is quicker and cheaper. We will say which side of the line you are on when you describe the load.

How far we go

Anywhere in HA5 and the surrounding postcodes for short work, and across the country for collections and single items. Sussex, the Cotswolds and the Home Counties are ordinary runs for a piece of furniture.

Worth knowing

Man and van, the honest answers

How many people come?

Two, on anything with furniture in it. One person and a wardrobe on a period staircase is how banisters and door frames get damaged.

Will you collect from a dealer or a saleroom?

Regularly — antiques, a single piece of furniture, a purchase that needs collecting from another county. Send the address, any reference, the seller's window and a description of the item.

Can you move one room rather than a house?

Yes. A room, a study, a garage-full or a few large pieces are all ordinary part-load work.

When should we book the full service instead?

Past a couple of rooms of furniture. At that point a man-and-van booking becomes several trips and a long day, and a proper removal is both quicker and better value.

Is the wrapping the same?

Identical to a full move: blankets, corner protection and straps. Only the quantity changes.

Describe the piece and both addresses.

What it is, the floor at each end, and whether a van can stand outside. That is enough for a straight answer.
